When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture the funny hypnotist figure popularized in movies or comic books. This funny man waves a pocket watch back and forth, guiding his subject into a zombie-like state. Some kind of mind control show. Once hypnotized, the person is compelled to obey, no matter how strange or immoral the request. Muttering “Yes, master,” or starts to act like a chicken.

This is NOT the case.

The actual understanding of hypnosis (hypnotherapy) contradicts this conception. A person in a hypnotic states are not slaves to their hypnotist, they have absolute free will. It is a trance like state characterized by extreme suggestibility, relaxation, and imagination. It’s not really like sleeping, because the subject is fully aware the whole time. It is most often compared to daydreaming or getting into a really good book or movie.
